What is a plant-based diet?

  • Plant-based is a diet based mainly on foods from plant sources: fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and grains.
  • Plant-based diets generally focus on whole foods and avoid processed foods such as white flour, bread or rice, biscuits, cakes and pastries, sodas, chips, sweets, added sugars or fast foods.
  • Plant-based does not necessarily mean you have to be a strict vegetarian or vegan, as long as your diet is rich in whole foods, and you eat mostly plant foods.  
  • In Healthy at 100, John Robbins reports that, in communities following a 99% plant-based diet, people lived longer, had few diseases and chronic illnesses, and were active, contributing, happy members of their community, often well into their 100s.
