Yoga for
Healthy Bones

Movement, Nutrition and Mindset
for Your Optimum Bone Health

Why this course?

At the age of 52, having just reached menopause, I asked my doctor if I should have a bone mineral density scan. She said, yes, it would be a good idea to get a baseline. We both assumed the results would be normal, considering my active lifestyle, healthy eating habits, and lack of major health issues.

To my surprise, the scan revealed that I had osteoporosis in my lumbar spine and osteopenia in my hip. I was hesitant to take pharmaceutical drugs due to concerns about their side effects, and instead, I wanted to focus on natural healing methods.

I turned to the natural healing methods I knew best and began researching how yoga, qigong, and nutrition could help with osteoporosis. I put everything I learned into practice and now, several years later, my bone density is better than it was when I was first diagnosed.

Now, I want to help other women learn how to take care of their bones naturally. I have put together this gentle and enjoyable program for you, using mindful movement, visualization, healthy eating, and developing a loving, positive mindset about your body and health.

Bone Health and Osteoporosis

Just like all the other parts of your body, your bones are constantly being broken down and remodeled.

  • Special cells called osteoclasts break down bones – this is called bone resorption.
  • Other cells called osteoblasts build up new bone – this is called bone deposition.

As people age and sex hormones decrease, the rate of bone resorption – breaking down bone, outpaces the rate of bone deposition – creating new bone. The net result is bones which have a less dense structure, making them lighter and more fragile. This means that you may be more likely to break a bone if you fall.

Western medicine calls this decrease in bone density osteopenia in the early stages and osteoporosis in the later stages osteo means bones and porosis means porous. While this is a normal result of aging, it is still a serious health issue, putting many older people at risk of fracture and the resulting deterioration of quality of life.

The good news is that yoga can provide the tools necessary to help people maintain improve and revitalize their bone health.
